Boonsak gets an Olympic boost

BOONSAK Ponsana of Thailand received a timely boost ahead of next month's Olympics when he clinched his second Singapore Open super series title yesterday.

The unseeded Boonsak, ranked World No 32, beat Wang Zhengming of China 21-18, 21-19 in 54 minutes to secure a morale boosting win that should serve him well in London.

Boonsak, who won the Singapore Open in 2007, has struggled with a series of injuries over the last two years and will be treated seriously by the top players in the Olympics due to his experience and current form.

In the men's doubles, Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan, likely to go separate ways after the Olympics, secured probably their last title as a pair when they defeated World No 4 Ko Sung Hyun-Yo Yeon Seong of South Korea 22-20, 11-21, 21-6.

Indonesia's young pair of Mohammad Ahsan-Bona Septano are set to be split after the Olympics where the former will most likely partner Hendra.

Markis, who has had to deal with heart problems the last two years, could try his luck with younger brother Bona, or might even call it quits if his physical condition doesn't improve.
